Chloe Smith has been the Conservative MP for Norwich North since winning a by-election in 2009. She was reelected in 2019 with a majority of 4,738.
Norwich North contains the north of the City of Norwich around Crome, Sewell, and Catton Grove, before spreading out beyond the city to include the areas of Hellesdon and Sprowston from Broadland. The seat is a long standing marginal constituency that generally fluctuates with the government of the day.
Smith was appointed Secretary of State for Work and Pensions in September 2021. However she held the role only for one month, being replaced by Rishi Sunak on the day that he became prime minister.
One month later in November 2022, Smith announced that she would stepping down from Westminster at the next election.
Smith supported Liz Truss in the 2022 Conservative leadership election. Smith was previously Minister of State for the Department for Work and Pensions between September 2021 and September 2022.
She previously served in the Government as Minister for the Constitution and Devolution (2020-2021), Parliamentary Secretary for the Cabinet Office (2018 – 2020), Under Secretary for Northern Ireland (2017-2018), and a spell as Economic Secretary to the Treasury (2011-2012).
Born in 1982, Smith grew up in Norfolk and is a governor of her old comprehensive school in Swaffham. She attended York University, before working as a management consultant for Deloitte.
When she was first elected to Parliament she was the youngest MP in the House of Commons.  She supported Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.
Smith is married with 2 children. She is a keen cyclist and badminton player, and likes the arts.
In June 2021, Smith detailed that she was free from breast cancer having been diagnosed with the illness in September 2020.
