Four environmental activists challenging the government’s green policy are holding a protest on the Bank of England.

The four are standing on a ledge overlooking the Royal Exchange in a bid to promote environmental issues before chancellor Alistair Darling addresses the Commons later.

“We want to send a message to Alistair Darling and Gordon Brown,” protestor James Turner told politics.co.uk.

“They have a unique opportunity to kickstart the economy by investing in clean and renewable energy for the UK. It’s a trick they’ve missed so far.”

The four will unveil a banner shortly but are currently negotiating with police, Mr Turner added.

He said governments around the world are realising the importance of fiscal stimulus packages to deal with the economic downturn.

“We think this is a real opportunity as much as a crisis,” he said.

When asked why he was protesting now, with the Pre-Budget Report already written, Mr Turner added: “This is an ongoing process. What we want this package to look like is a clean energy, climate change package.”
