Lib Dems target rural issues
The Liberal Democrats are to turn their attentions to rural issues in their election campaign.
Party leader Charles Kennedy is set to accuse Labour and Conservatives of being out of touch with the concerns of the countryside.
Mr Kennedy will outline a string of pledges, including new forms of affordable home ownership and stricter planning controls on holiday homes as part of his aim to promote sustainable communities.
The party will also reaffirm their strong stance against the development of GM crops whilst raising the debate on issues such as safeguards for the Post Office network, rate relief for small businesses and reform of common agricultural and fisheries policies.
“Liberal Democrats understand the issues that make a real difference to people in rural areas,” said Mr Kennedy.
“Agriculture is in a state of continuing crisis, the transport system is inadequate, local schools are closing down and public services generally are stretched.
“Labour does not seem to care about the countryside, but we also remember the damage suffered by the rural economy under the previous 18 years of Conservative rule.”
