Iran still has much to explain, says El Pais

The UN’s nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, is expected to report later this month that Iran has failed to abide by a number of international nuclear safety protocols.

International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei told Spanish newspaper El Pais that new breaches would be detailed in a report to be sent to the watchdog’s board of governors on November 20th.

Iran’s ambassador to the IAEA, Ali Akbar Salehi, said on October 24th that the report would highlight Iran’s failure to adhere to elements of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The IAEA has challenged Iran to prove it was not working covertly to manufacture highly enriched uranium, which can be used to make atomic bombs.

Iran, which sits alongside pre-war Iraq and reclusive communist state North Korea on US President George W Bush’s “axis of evil,” denies it has any intention of acquiring nuclear weapons, insisting its primary concern is to increase domestic energy supplies.
