Police examine football ‘rape’ case CCTV
Police investigating an alleged rape involving eight Premiership footballers have been studying CCTV footage taken from the hotel.
The alleged incident took place over the weekend at London’s five-star Grosvenor House hotel in Park Lane.
Scotland Yard has confirmed a 17-year-old girl made a complaint at a central London Police station on Saturday.
Police forensic experts have also been examining rooms at the hotel for DNA evidence. Experts reportedly searched a third floor bedroom and bathroom at the Grosvenor House yesterday.
Detectives from Operation Sapphire, the Metropolitan Police’s task force to tackle sex crimes, will take a full statement from the girl within the next few days.
The decision over whether or not to make further inquiries with anyone involved in the alleged attack will the be taken.
The girl reportedly agreed to consensual sex with one player before seven others entered the hotel room. She is believed to have made an allegation of rape and several allegations of indecent assault against the players.
No footballers or clubs have been named by police in connection with the allegation. Police are urging the media to be restrained in their coverage.
The hotel, the Premier League and the Professional Footballers’ Association have all refused to comment.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: ‘Inquiries are ongoing into allegations of rape by a 17-year-old woman.
‘The allegation was made in person by the woman at a central London police station. We are still at an early stage in this inquiry.’
