Alex Salmond’s Alba Party to push ‘case for Scottish independence’ at climate protest led by Greta Thunberg
Taking to Twitter, the Alba Party advertised that it “will take the case for Scottish independence” to the COP26 Coalition’s “Global Day for Climate Justice” rally. Scheduled for Saturday November 6, the march will also be attended by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.
Unfortunately, it is entirely likely that Salmond’s Alba activists will be drowned out by the other 100,000 people expected to attend.
The organisers of the rally want to urge national governments to commit to cutting emissions and implementing solutions that will limit global temperature rise to no more than 1.5 degrees. Sarah Fleming of the COP26 Coalition has said previously: “It is clear that justice won’t be handed to us by world leaders or delivered by corporations. Only we can imagine and build the future that works for all of us”.
Alba has placed climate change pledges at the centre of the party’s pitch for independence. Speaking to The National, Alba general secretary Chris McEleny argued that “without the full powers of independence Scotland is set to miss out on the economic benefits of achieving Net Zero”.
