Long-Bailey, Rebecca

Rebecca Long Bailey was first elected as the Labour MP for Salford & Eccles in 2015, being reelected in 2019 with a majority of 16,327.

The constituency of Salford and Eccles is found in the heart of Greater Manchester.  Once a centre of the textile industry, this area has been the focus of significant regeneration in recent years.  It now contains Salford Quay’s, Britain’s Media City and home of the BBC and ITV in the north of England.  Salford University is also found here.  This is a safe Labour seat which has been held by the party continuously ever since 1945.

Long-Bailey served briefly as Shadow Secretary of State for Education before being sacked by Keir Starmer in 2020.

A strong ally of former Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn, Long-Bailey was Shadow Secretary of State for Business in the Shadow Cabinet between 2017-2020 after sharing a tweet that made reference to the Israeli secret services.

Long Bailey came second in the 2020 Labour Leadership election.

She is on the left of the Labour Party, and used to share a London flat with the Labour Deputy Leader, Angela Rayner.  She has rated Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party as 10 out of 10.  She supports more widespread public ownership of industries and is opposed to Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons programme.

Rebecca Long Bailey worked as a solicitor specialising in NHS contracts and NHS estates before being elected to Parliament. In her earlier years, Long-Bailey had a job serving at the shop counter of a pawn shop which she cites as providing her with an education into people’s struggles in life.  She has also worked in call centres, a furniture factory, and as a postwoman.

Born in 1980, Long Bailey is the daughter of Jimmy Long-Bailey, a Salford docker and a trade union representative at Shell, Barton Docks.

Long Bailey was one of just a handful of Labour MPs to vote against the renewal of the Coronavirus Act and its associated restrictions in late 2020, arguing the law needed further Parliamentary scrutiny.

She was educated at Manchester Metropolitan University and is married with one child.  Long-Bailey is a fan of Manchester United football club.
