Biography:
Malcolm Wicks was re-elected MP for Croydon North in May 2010 with a majority of 16,483 votes.
Malcolm has lived in Croydon for over 30 years with his wife, Margaret. His three children all attended local state schools and sixth form college. He has served as a school governor and was a member of Croydon Community Health Council for many years.
Before becoming an MP, Malcolm worked in the Urban Deprivation Unit of the Home Office, was a lecturer, and, until 1992, was Director of the Family Policy Studies Centre. He has been the author of several publications, including one of the first studies of hypothermia, Old and Cold: hypothermia and social policy.
He maintains a keen interest in local organisations and is currently President of Carer to Carer, a Vice-President of South East Cancer Centre and the Croydon Philharmonic Choir, and a patron of the West Croydon Refugee Centre and the Bangladesh Welfare Association inter alia.
Nationally he is a vice-president of Carers UK and the Alzheimer’s Society.
He is one of a handful of MPs whose Private Member’s Bills have made the statute books, how the Carers (Recognition & Services) Act 1995, recognising the needs of family carers for the first time.
In 1999 Tony Blair appointed him Minister for Lifelong Learning in the Department for Education & Employment. In June 2001 he became a Minister in the Department for Work & Pensions, first as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State dealing with Housing Benefit, Fraud, etc. In June 2003 he was promoted to Minister of State with responsibility for pensions. In May 2005 he was appointed Minister for Energy in the Department of Trade & Industry. In November 2006 he was appointed Minister for Science & Innovation in the same Department. From June 2007 – October 2008 he served as Minister for Energy in the new Department of Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform. He is currently the Prime Minister’s Special Representative on International Energy Issues.
In his spare time he enjoys gardening and listening to music.
