PCS: Defence letter reveals the truth about "draconian" cuts

Responding to news reports of Liam Fox's leaked letter to the Telegraph today (29 September), the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) believes the letter reveals the truth about the strategic defence review and government cuts.

PCS has been calling the cuts 'draconian' for some time and are heartened that the Secretary of State shares this view. The union believes that this secret, hurried, Treasury driven review has little to do with producing the best possible support to the front line at the most affordable price.

The letter is further evidence that the level of cuts required by the Treasury is unsustainable and will devastate important public services.

PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka said: "PCS agrees that there cannot be 'draconian cuts' if we wish to continue our current support to the front line, especially at a time when the armed forces are in harm's way. Cuts of this severity will destroy jobs and devastate communities.

"Liam Fox has now confirmed that the issue of public sector cuts is not only splitting the coalition, it is fracturing the Conservative party."

"PCS believe that there is an alternative way to reduce the deficit based on public investment and collecting the £120billion of taxation, which is currently uncollected, avoided or evaded."

"PCS has also proposed a coherent programme for defence: identifying and reducing waste; freeing up service personnel to serve in the front line by civilianising non essential military posts and eliminating unnecessary expenditure such as the use of consultants to concentrate on delivering top class support to our armed forces."
