Major step forward in NASUWT campaign to protect children from energy drinks harms

Commenting on news that the Government will consult on a ban on energy drink sales to young people, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT-The Teachers’ Union, said:

“This shift in policy by the Government on energy drinks is welcome. The NASUWT has long led the campaign to draw attention to the negative impact excessive consumption of highly caffeinated products can have on the health and wellbeing of children and young people.

“Teachers and school leaders continue to see first-hand the contribution energy drinks can make to poor pupil behaviour and their ability to concentrate in class. Action to restrict young people’s access to these drinks is long overdue.

“The NASUWT will engage fully in the consultation process, which, it should be noted, applies only to the law in England. The Union will continue to press for comparable measures to be introduced everywhere else in the UK.”
