MDU continu es to achieve excellent results in defence of historic GP claims

The Medical Defence Union (MDU), the UK’s leading medical defence organisation, is continuing to successfully defend the vast majority of its GP members’ compensation claims.

On the one-year anniversary of the launch of state indemnity for future GP claims, the MDU has analysed the ongoing results being achieved on existing GP claims in which the care in question pre-dated the introduction of the state CNSGP scheme.

Over 80% of the claims the MDU resolved on behalf of GP members during the last year were defended successfully. In those cases no liability was established against the GP and no damages or claimant legal costs paid.

Dr Matthew Lee, MDU professional services director said:

“The MDU team is busy assisting GP members facing clinical negligence claims arising from incidents that happened before 1 April 2019. Over the past year we achieved exceptionally good results for our GP members. Over 80% of the cases were closed with no liability established against the member concerned and no payment of damages or claimant costs.

“MDU members can be confident that we remain focussed on retaining our excellent rebuttal rate for GPs who are usually sued individually in their own name. We bear in mind that, as well as affecting their professional reputation, claims against GPs can feel very personal.

"It is important to members that their claims are handled skilfully by experts who are mindful of the impact of a claim on each GP. Our GP members' claims remain in the best possible hands benefitting from our claims team's unrivalled expertise and the excellent results they achieve."
