IFAW: Draft Bill cautiously welcomed as much-needed measure to help protect Britain’s marine life

(London – April 3) – The publication of the draft Marine Bill has been cautiously welcomed by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) as a long overdue and important step to help protect marine life around Britain’s coasts.

However, IFAW warned that the proposed network of marine protected areas must provide full protection for wildlife and ecologically important habitats and that authorities must have the necessary powers to prevent damaging activities.

Today’s publication of the draft Bill follows several years of consultation between Government, environmental groups and industry.

Robbie Marsland, Director of IFAW UK, said: “We look forward to studying the proposals carefully and working with the Government, Parliamentarians, fellow NGOs, scientists and industry to make sure that the Bill provides comprehensive protection for marine wildlife and the marine environment.

“The Bill must ensure that marine wildlife is protected from the myriad of threats faced today, including man-made underwater noise pollution, accidental by-catch, habitat destruction and ship strikes.”
