Sir David Frost dies

Legendary TV broadcaster and interviewer Sir David Frost has died of a suspected heart attack while on a cruise.

The 74-year-old had been giving a speech on the Queen Elizabeth.

"David loved broadcasting, did it brilliantly for more than 50 years and was eagerly looking forward to a host of projects – including interviewing the prime minister next week – before his sudden and tragic death. We will all miss him enormously," Breakfast with Frost editor Barney Jones.

Frost's career spanned journalism and satire, but his most famous moment came in a lenghty interview with disgraced US president Richard Nixon, which was later dramatised in the Oscar nominated movie Frost/Nixon.

"My heart goes out to Carina and the family," David Cameron said.

"Sir David was an extraordinary man –  with charm, wit, talent, intelligence and warmth in equal measure.  He made a huge impact on television and politics.  The Nixon interviews were among the great broadcast moments – but there were many other brilliant interviews.

"He could be – and certainly was with me – both a friend and a fearsome interviewer."

Ed Miliband said: "Deep condolences to Sir David Frost's family. He defined a new era of the TV interview. Never intimidated by Prime Ministers or Presidents."

A statement read: "His family are devastated and ask for privacy at this difficult time. A family funeral will be held in the near future and details of a memorial service will be announced in due course."
