DCLG: Sustainable Communities Act draft guidance

Monday, 18 Feb 2008 00:00
This consultation focuses on draft guidance and regulations for the Sustainable Communities Act, legislation arising from Conservative MP Nick Hurd's private member's bill in the 2006/07 session.

The act is based on the principle that local people know what is best for their community. It enables central government to take action, on request from local authorities, which will improve prospects for long-term sustainability in a particular area.

"This could include a proposal to transfer the functions of one public body to another," the consultation document states. The act does not contain any limits to the type of actions which can be delegated, but these have to be shortlisted by a 'selector' – presumably the Local Government Association.

The consultation period ends on May 12th 2008.
