Anne-Marie Trevelyan was elected as the Conservative MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed in 2015 gaining the seat from the Liberal Democrats for the first time in over forty years. She was reelected in 2019 with a majority of 14,835.
The constituency of Berwick upon Tweed is the most northerly seat in England. It is a large rural constituency that spreads over 1,000 square miles. It contains the northern half of the county of Northumberland, including the towns of Berwick upon Tweed itself, Alnwick and Amble. Containing Holy Island, this seat also possesses an extremely long coastline that stretches for some fifty miles.
This seat was once a Liberal stronghold being held by Alan Beith for the Liberal Party and then Liberal Democrats continuously between 1973 and 2015. This area is one of just a handful of areas in the north east of England never to have voted Labour. The Conservatives have increased their majority considerably here since gaining the seat in 2015.
Trevelyan is currenty the Minister of State at the Foreign Office. She was demoted into this role when Rishi Sunak became prime minister in October 2022.
Previously she served as Secretary of State for Transport in September 2022 but only stayed in the role for a month. Trevelyan backed Liz Truss in the 2022 Conservative Party leadership election.
Trevelyan had previously sat in the Cabinet as the Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade between September 2021 and September 2022. Before that she sat briefly in the Cabinet in 2020 as the last Secretary of State for International Development before the Department was abolished.
Amongst her junior ministerial roles, Trevelyhas has been the Minister of State responsible for Business, Energy and Clean Growth, and Minister of State at the Ministry of Defence between 2019 and 2020.
Trevelyan was a strong supporter of Brexit, and was an active member of the European Research Group of Conservative MPs.
She backed Boris Johnson in the 2019 Conservative Party leadership election.
In April 2022, she told LBC that she had been assaulted by a former Conservative MP during her time in the House of Commons.
Born in Morpeth, Northumberland, in 1969, Trevelyan studied maths at Oxford Polytechnic. She then trained as a chartered account and worked for PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
Trevelyan is divorced with two children.
