NUT on Pupil Premium: Schools should be fully resourced in the first place

Commenting on Ofsted’s survey report Pupil Premium: How schools are spending the funding successfully to maximise achievement, Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“At a time of huge budget cuts, schools are having to make ends meet and have had to use pupil premium money to plug gaps caused by funding problems.  Schools should be fully resourced to provide the first class education service we need to secure sustainable economic recovery.

“Sir Michael Wilshaw’s suggestion that money assigned to providing summer schools for secondary pupils should be handed over to boost the pupil premium sums up the inadequacy of this Government’s education policies. Either something is worth doing or it is not.  We cannot have a situation where money is just moved about the system to fund the latest project or plan.

“The Government’s priority must be to restore funding and access to resources for schools to ensure that they can provide and meet the needs of all their pupils.”
