MDU welcomes introduction of state-backed indemnity scheme for GPs in Wales

The Medical Defence Union (MDU) welcomes the announcement by Health Secretary, Vaughan Gething, that the Welsh government will introduce a state-backed scheme to provide clinical negligence indemnity for GPs and primary healthcare staff in Wales from April 2019.

Dr Christine Tomkins, MDU chief executive, said:

'We have been highlighting the unaffordable cost of GP indemnity for some time through our Save General Practice campaign. Today's announcement of a state-backed indemnity scheme for GPs and their staff in Wales comes not a moment too soon. With a similar scheme also due to be introduced in April 2019 for GPs in England, it is only fair that Welsh GPs benefit from same support with spiralling indemnity costs, which are not of their making.

'We are looking forward to working with the Welsh government to ensure the scheme is comprehensive and effective.'
