18/06/2008: NOAH pet event and launch of the pet health information website
Wednesday, 18 Jun 2008 17:05
Smeaton Room, 1 Great George Street, London SW1 3AA
12.30 to 2.30pm on Wednesday 18 June 2008
In 2006, NOAH commissioned some research into pet owner attitudes to the prevention of disease in pets, to compare the thoughts of those who did routinely prevent disease, with those who did not.
Both groups plainly love their pets - but preventing disease was not seen as part of that love. For example, only 55% dogs and 46% cats over two years old are vaccinated. Only 40% dogs in the UK will see a vet during a year. Yet the Animal Welfare Act Duty to Care includes the need for animals to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease.
The NOAH research showed that the internet was key for pet owners to find out information about their pets. Good information exists on the web to help pet owners, yet there is clearly room for more. NOAH hopes the Pet Health Information website will supplement, complement and help point owners to good pet health advice, and help increase the momentum to improve the health and welfare of our nation’s pets.
NOAH is keen to work with others to help promote the prevention of disease in companion animals. We are inviting politicians, researchers, representatives for the veterinary and other pet health professional organisations, animal welfare charities and charities involved with the human/animal bond (such as assistance animals) to join us at 1 Great George Street to discuss this important aspect of pet health and welfare.
We are delighted that Lord Soulsby of Swaffham Prior, Chairman of the Companion Animal Welfare Council, will be joining us at the event to say a few words.
