Gordon Brown has called on Britain to draw a line under the death of Princess Diana, after the inquest into her death recorded a verdict of unlawfully killing.

Speaking to the media, the prime minister said: "I think it's important that we draw a line.

"William and Harry have spoken for the whole country when they say this is time to bring this to an end."

He added the inquest had taken up valuable resources from the security services, suggesting a repeat of any inquest – as demanded by Mohammed Al Fayed – would undermine the war on terror.

"I believe also that our security services who have co-operated with the inquiry would continue to be diverted from the important work they did if we had to have another rerun of this."
