The Conservative conference takes place at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool from September 30 to October 3.

David Cameron will front his second conference as party leader. While last year saw him enter frontline politics as the golden boy of politics, this year sees the Conservative leader on the defensive. Despite a strong performance in May's local election, Gordon Brown's arrival at Number 10 has seen Mr Cameron lose the poll lead he gained on Tony Blair. He has been further dented by ripples of dissent within his own party, most notably the protracted row over grammar schools.

Mr Cameron will be under pressure to present a solid policy platform at this year's conference. This summer sees the culmination of his policy review groups, providing the Tory leader with the foundation needed to assert his policy agenda.
