Nearly ten years ago, Tony Blair put the future of nuclear power on hold. But a decade on, the issue is back on the agenda and is no less controversial.
The government's energy review published this summer stated clearly that nuclear power would play a part in Britain's future energy mix, alongside an increased use of renewables and greater emphasis on energy efficiency.
Nuclear power currently generates 20 per cent of the UK's electricity, but this is set to fall sharply in the 2020s as existing plants have to close. A decision on whether they will be replaced is needed soon.
However, opposition to nuclear power is as strong as ever. A major concern is what to do with the radioactive waste it produces. The government recently announced plans to bury it deep underground, but critics argue this is far from an ideal solution.
politics.co.uk has brought together some of the leading decision makers and opinion formers and invited them to put their side of this divisive debate to the public.
